Brace yourself: Weighing up your teeth straightening options

The beauty of modern day dentistry is that people now have plenty of choice in how to straighten their teeth. But with choice inevitably comes confusion – should you go for Invisalign or lingual braces? What about clear braces?

Patients who see me in Southport and Manchester and who are longing for straighter teeth, are often unsure about which route to take. The truth is, the position of your teeth tends to guide the optimum straightening method for you anyway – a brace consultation will allow the dentist to identify the most appropriate method and explain the treatment plan in greater detail.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most popular teeth straightening methods:

Invisalign

Just like the name suggests, Invisalign aligners are removable and almost invisible. Patients typically change the aligner every two weeks, with teeth moving little by little, week by week.

This type of straightening method is popular, because teeth can be aligned discretely – with few people noticing you’re even wearing a brace. However, Invisalign isn’t for everyone – if your teeth are extremely crooked or over-crowded it can take longer than the other options so it may not be the best option for you.

Fixed Ceramic Braces (Six Month Smiles / Simply Smile)

These fast-acting braces are fitted to the front of your teeth, but come with clear brackets and tooth-coloured wires meaning they’re far less noticeable than a traditional fixed metal brace.

In terms of treatment time – treatment is typically completed in between six and twelve months, which is why they tend to be most appropriate for mild / moderate crowding issues.

Fixed Lingual braces (Secret Smile)

A great development from clear fixed braces, Secret Smile braces allow you to straighten teeth without anyone knowing. They’re fixed lingually – behind the teeth – which means you don’t even have to tell people you’re having dental treatment if you don’t want to.

As with all other braces, they can straighten both your upper and lower teeth and are an attractive option due to their discrete nature.

There are plenty of options for people looking to improve their smile and fix misalignment issues that may have been on their mind for years. And the best thing is, some of the options allow straightening to be done without anyone else needing to know.
